Macintosh Portable upgrades

Open hardware SCSI emulator with SD-backed storage, optional Wi-Fi networking, and host-side management tools.

For this system (exact model): JCM's model-specific adapter connects the Portable's 34-pin motherboard cable to a 50-pin BlueSCSI v2 Desktop, supplies power, and includes a matching mounting bracket. BlueSCSI is not included, and the SD card must use the BlueSCSI Mac Plus INI file. The bracket is specific to the v2 Desktop board.

Current seller checks on 2026-07-27 found a $39 internal 50-pin Pico 2 W kit, a $49 assembled external DB-25 model, a $49 PowerBook model, and a $59 assembled Ultra Narrow 50-pin model at authorized seller ToTs RETRO. JCM also carried assembled Ultra hardware and model-specific Macintosh adapters. Prices, stock, included media, and support differ by seller. Ultra models require Berg or Molex power and cannot run from SCSI termination power. The initial Ultra hardware release is not yet open hardware, although its firmware remains GPL; the project says hardware licensing will open later.

Adds bank-activity LEDs and up to 8 MB of recognized memory through the Macintosh Portable memory slot.

For this system (exact model): For M5120 systems, use the seller's supported 8 MB jumper setting and avoid the experimental 9 MB configuration. For M5126 systems, the supported configuration exposes 5 MB; more memory requires the included /AS wire to the ROM slot and is not supported by MacEffects.

The MacEffects page said Sold out on 2026-07-24. The non-backlit M5120 is supported at 8 MB; a reported 9 MB jumper setup is unstable and unsupported. The backlit M5126 is sold as a 5 MB card unless the installer adds the included /AS jumper wire at their own risk.

Replaces the Macintosh Portable's lead-acid battery so the computer can run from a sufficiently capable external supply.

For this system (exact model): The maker reports booting, floppy copying, original-hard-drive use, and BlueSCSI booting on an M5120, plus separate successful testing on an M5126 backlit Portable. Use a correctly regulated 7.5 V supply with more than 1.5 A capacity.

The product page exposed an Add to cart path on 2026-07-24. A suitable higher-current 7.5 V supply is still required. This board does not remedy capacitor leakage or other faults in an unrestored Portable.

Replaces the failure-prone power-control hybrid module in the non-backlit M5120 Macintosh Portable.

For this system (exact model): Compatible only with the non-backlit M5120 variant. Installation requires soldering and careful orientation; the supplied pin headers are not preinstalled. The M5126 backlit Portable is explicitly unsupported.

JCM showed three units in stock on 2026-07-24. This part is only for the non-backlit M5120 and is not compatible with the backlit M5126. Perform the maker's resistance and voltage pre-check first; damaged surrounding circuitry can make replacement harmful. After installation, monitor the main 5 V rail and A/D line as directed.

Converts the Macintosh Portable's internal 34-pin SCSI connection for a 2.5-inch notebook SCSI device.

For this system (exact model): The kit explicitly converts the Macintosh Portable's internal 34-pin SCSI connection to a 2.5-inch notebook SCSI interface for SD PowerMonster. A general 3.5-inch hard drive does not fit.

Replaces the display flex cable in a backlit M5126 or an M5120 fitted with Apple's backlight upgrade.

For this system (exact model): Choose the M5126 cable only for a factory-backlit M5126. Choose the M5120 version only when an M5120 has Apple's official backlit-screen upgrade; the seller explicitly says that version is not for the M5126.

JCM showed eight M5126 cables and fourteen M5120 backlight-upgrade cables in stock on 2026-07-24. The two variants are not interchangeable, and neither listing claims support for an unmodified non-backlit M5120.

Connects modern USB HID keyboards and mice to Macintosh computers through Apple Desktop Bus.

For this system (exact model): HIDHopper basic keyboard and mouse operation was explicitly tested on a Macintosh Portable. Do not hot-plug ADB or USB devices, and externally power the optional Hub Hat.

HIDHopper Base, Base with USB Hub Hat, and Hub Hat-only selections could be added to the JCM cart on 2026-07-24. The assembled QuokkADB Rev. 2022g remained sold out, while its Raspberry Pi Pico Community Edition remained buildable. HIDHopper's Hub Hat requires external USB-C power, must be power-cycled between Macintosh starts, and can otherwise exceed the host's ADB power budget.

SD-card storage adapters for notebook SCSI, internal 50-pin SCSI, and external DB-25 SCSI connections.

For this system (exact model): Artmix sells a separate adapter cable kit that converts the Portable's internal 34-pin SCSI connection to the 2.5-inch notebook SCSI interface used by SD PowerMonster. A general 3.5-inch hard drive does not fit that kit.

The standalone PowerMonster, AztecMonster, and SusanoMonster pages exposed current Add to cart controls on 2026-07-24. The external PowerMonster with BakMonolith kit was out of stock. Mac OS installations need suitable third-party formatting software. Hot swapping works only when the host operating system supports removable media and may require explicit unmount and mount operations.

Displays Macintosh Portable video on a VGA monitor at 640 by 480 with centered 640 by 400 content.

For this system (exact model): The maker explicitly supports both the original M5120 and backlit M5126. Connect the adapter directly to the Portable's external display connector while the computer is powered off.

JCM showed 46 Hardware Version 1 adapters in stock on 2026-07-24. Connect or disconnect only while the Portable is off. Never use a VGA extender cable between the adapter and computer; it can short and damage the Portable. Keep conductive objects away from the exposed connector pin carrying battery voltage.
