Build itChecked Jul 27, 2026CS/A65 VC1581 Replicaby Andre Fachat

Builds a Commodore 1581-compatible IEC disk drive from CS/A65 processor and floppy-interface cards.

No assembled seller or current PCB supplier was verified. A build needs PETCPU and DRVIO cards, a backplane, components, a suitable 720 KB drive mechanism, a legal 1581 ROM image, power, cabling, and an enclosure. DRVIO revision 1.1A is marked okay and was tested with double-density PC drives; PETCPU revision 1.1B publishes board files but its layout is marked untested. High-density operation can overclock the WD1772 and is not the documented 1581 configuration.

Build itChecked Jul 30, 2026Diag264 Diagnostic ROM and Harnessby Rob Clarke, with OpenC16Cart hardware by SukkoPera

DIY diagnostic ROM and loopback harness for PAL and NTSC Commodore 264-family computers.

Rob Clarke's current download directory offered Diag264 0.97 on 2026-07-30. The maker also offers a programmed EPROM at media and postage cost by email. The software is CC BY-NC-ND 4.0: unmodified personal distribution with attribution is allowed, but modification and commercial resale are prohibited. The maker warns that some third-party marketplace copies were unauthorized or modified. Loopback hardware may be resold when the attribution conditions are met.

Build itChecked Jul 27, 2026Meatloafby Jaime Idolpx

Emulates Commodore IEC devices and loads files from local flash, an SD card, or network servers over Wi-Fi.

The project provides source, several ESP32 hardware profiles, build instructions, and a browser-based firmware flasher. No direct retail source was verified, so builders must select matching hardware and firmware before connecting it to a computer.

AvailableChecked Jul 25, 2026Pi1541by Pi1541 project

Cycle-exact Commodore 1541 disk-drive emulation using a Raspberry Pi and SD-card disk images.

Retro Electronics listed one assembled Option B Pi1541 Hat in stock on 2026-07-25. The Hat is the only supplied part; add a supported Raspberry Pi, SD card, serial cable, legal drive ROM, quality USB cable, and at least a 2.5 A power supply. The official project does not support Raspberry Pi 4 or 5.

AvailableChecked Jul 27, 2026QuadPortIECby RETRO Innovations

Open four-port Commodore IEC hub with a switch that can hide each attached branch from bus attention.

Retro 8bit Shop showed one new unit in stock on 2026-07-27, while the Eagle design remains open for DIY builds. This original design switches only ATN, not every IEC signal; disabled devices remain electrically connected to CLK, DATA, and RESET and can still load or disturb the bus. The acrylic case is an accessory folded into this hardware family.

AvailableChecked Jul 27, 2026RAD Expansion Unitby Frenetic

Uses a Raspberry Pi cartridge to emulate up to 16 MB of REU memory or up to 4 MB of GeoRAM-compatible memory on a C64 or C128.

Retrobit listed five assembled cartridge boards with cases at PLN 93.50 on 2026-07-27. A Raspberry Pi Zero 2 W and microSD card are not included. The upstream project describes RAD as a playground for new features and documents machine-dependent timing and power limitations.

Build itChecked Jul 25, 2026SCSI-64 Project Familyby Andre Fachat

Adds SCSI disk hardware to a Commodore 64 through a CS/A adapter, with experimental external IEC-drive variants.

Only the modular C64 CS/A adapter plus CS/A SCSI card combination is reported tested and working. The simplified combined C64 board was not fully checked. VC-SCSI 1.0's component boards were tested separately but not as a complete drive, VC-SCSI 1.x remained an idea, and VC-SCSI 2.x was preliminary and untested. The published FAT12/FAT16 filesystem software is explicitly early beta and may corrupt a disk; never test it with valuable media. No current kit or assembled seller was verified.

AvailableChecked Jul 30, 2026SD2IEC Familyby sd2iec contributors and hardware makers

Family of IEC storage devices that lets supported Commodore computers access files and disk images on SD or other removable media.

Retro Lemon listed its user-port-powered C64, C128, VIC-20, and SX-64 variant in stock at GBP 34.17 on 2026-07-27, and Sordan exposed a current Buy now path for its combined SD2IEC and Tapecart variant. PolyPlay's plain external Sordan Micro device and Retro Electronics' internal board were out of stock, while the RetroFletch backplane seller was on a break. A complete open C64 SD2IEC LP hardware build is also available. Variant power, connectors, controls, and firmware configuration differ. The official firmware site says 0.x firmware is obsolete and warns that newer-dated bootloaders are not necessarily safer or better.

AvailableChecked Jul 30, 2026VIC-20 Diagnostic Cartridge and Harness Familyby Sven Petersen, based on Commodore service software; assembled by several sellers

Tests a VIC-20's keyboard, IEC, user, cassette, and joystick interfaces with a machine-specific cartridge and loopback harness.

AMI64 listed its GBP 47 complete cartridge-and-harness kit as available in around ten days on 2026-07-30. CMD Marketplace listed three USD 59.90 PAL/NTSC kits, but its Tindie page exposed conflicting United States shipping text and no usable US rate. Sven Petersen publishes the GPLv3 hardware and firmware project.

Build itChecked Jul 25, 2026XS1541by Nils Eilers and Andre Fachat

Bridges a modern computer over USB serial to Commodore IEEE-488 and IEC equipment, or supplies host-backed storage to a Commodore computer.

The maintainer explicitly calls XS1541 orphaned and reconstructed its documentation from an archived build guide. The surviving page provides a schematic, firmware, and detailed assembly and flashing steps, but not a turnkey current kit. The original board connector footprints are buggy: the narrow connector can short contacts unless the coding gap is physically corrected. A build also requires fine-pitch FT232RL soldering, ATmega programming, fuse setup, cables, and suitable host software.
